The fire in Nox-Crete, a chemical plant south of downtown Omaha, was filed shortly before 7 p.m., the city’s fire department said. Huge flames engulfed part of the building, sending columns of dark smoke into the air, a video from CNN’s KETV affiliate showed tonight.
Firefighters have recommended evacuating people living between South 13th and South 20th Streets and Leavenworth and Martha Streets “due to explosions and smoke from the fire,” City Fire Chief Scott Fitzpatrick told CNN late Monday.
Nox-Crete manufactures chemicals to support concrete work, according to the company’s website. CNN’s attempts to reach Knox Crete for comment were not immediately successful.
The crews continued to fight the fire early Tuesday, a video from KETV showed. No injuries were reported until late Monday, Fitzpatrick said. The fire penetrated the roof, “as the walls become structurally unstable,” an Omaha Fire Department said in a statement.
The cause of the fire is not known immediately, the department said.
People evacuating can go to Columbus Community Center in Omaha if they need shelter, the department said.
