Saturday afternoon began as a dark, if familiar, ritual.
Dozens of protesters gathered outside the apartment building on Minneapolis’ south side where police fatally shot a black man two days earlier.
His name was Andrew Tekle Sundberg; his family said he had a mental breakdown that led to a standoff with police overnight, and activists wanted to know why police could not capture him alive.
“We are here to respect life, to demand justice, and to demand the release of the CCTV footage,” said Traherne Crews, lead organizer for Black Lives Matter Minnesota, through a megaphone.
Then a woman named Arabella Foss-Yarbrough came up and started screaming.
She lived down the hall from Sundberg, she said, and was home Wednesday night with her 2- and 4-year-old sons when bullets tore through her front door. She said she and her sons quickly fell to the floor. Foss-Yarbrough called the police, who evacuated them from the building.
She said she is still traumatized. She said she believed she could have died.
