A spokesman for the Vancouver Police Department, Const. Tanya Visintin said police were called to the gas station on Hastings and Skina streets at 6:30 a.m. after witnesses saw a man in a vehicle hitting a pedestrian.
The 61-year-old suspect is said to have gotten out of the car armed with a knife and machete and started chasing people at the gas station.
“He reportedly hit a passer-by, then turned his attention to the pedestrian, stabbing him in the neck and back,” Visintin said.
“When he tried to steal a motorcycle parked at the gas station, he was stopped by officers (and arrested).”
Visintin said at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, a man was seen driving the same vehicle in the Vancouver crash while fleeing police in several Vancouver subway cities.
“When the car was taken away by the police, it is alleged that the driver crashed into the police vehicle and fled again,” she said.
“We do not know if there was a motive for this attack and the fact that it seems arbitrary and unprovoked is extremely worrying. The victims and the suspect do not know each other and do not appear to have had significant interactions before the attack.
The 67-year-old stabbed was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Video of the incident was recorded on video and posted on social networks.
