One person has died after an ammonia leak at Mount Paul Industrial Park in Kamloops, according to city officials.
The leak occurred on Thursday morning, with the city of Kamloops confirming that one person had died in the accident.
“Public safety is our top priority – the scene is now stable and evacuated companies and other citizens can do their job in the area,” the city said.

On Thursday afternoon, the RCMP said the Tk’emlúps village detachment and the Southeast District General Investigation Service were investigating the cause of the ammonia leak.
The city initially asked residents to avoid the 790 Sarcee Street East area.

Police said they had responded to help the Kamloops Fire and Rescue Service following reports of a leak in the area.
“Traffic was diverted while nearby businesses were evacuated. “One person was transported to hospital from the original incident and unfortunately died of his injuries,” Kamloops told RCMP.

In a social media statement Thursday morning, the city of Kamloops said a hazardous materials team was on its way and that the RCMP was helping to close roads.
Following this announcement, CFJC Today said that sources at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops indicated that one person had died due to a leak.
CFJC Today also said that according to a source from Royal Inland Hospital, an “orange code” was called to prepare staff to accept mass casualties, but that it was canceled 12 hours ago.

BC’s emergency services told Global News that a man was taken to hospital in critical condition after a call around 10:30 a.m. and that five paramedic teams and two supervisors had responded.

BCEHS said two other patients were transported to the hospital in stable condition, while about six other patients believed to be in stable condition were assessed on the spot.
In an email to Global News, Interior Health confirmed that the hospital had made preparations to receive patients from the Kamloops accident and had been informed that eight patients would be brought.

During the incident, the Interior Ministry asked residents with non-urgent needs to avoid visiting the emergency department.

At 1:30 p.m., the Home Office announced that Royal Inland Hospital was providing care for four patients related to the incident.
And at 2:30 p.m., IH said all four were evaluated, treated, if necessary, and discharged.
Meanwhile, WorkSafeBC says an investigation into the incident has begun.
“The purpose of our investigation is to identify the cause of the incident, including all contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented in the future,” WorkSafe said. “We are unable to provide any further details while the investigation is ongoing.”
Kamloops RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn added, “with public safety now, police will conduct a parallel investigation with WorkSafeBC to determine what led to the fatal leak.”

Technical Safety BC, an independent organization that oversees the safe installation and operation of BC’s technical systems and equipment, says it has a road safety officer.

The organization says it will work with other agencies to investigate the equipment involved and determine the cause of the incident.
“Our condolences are to the friends, colleagues and relatives of the person who lost his life in today’s incident,” said Technical Safety BC, who added that he would provide additional information when it became available.
“Awareness of the safety of ammonia is one of the main priorities of BC Technical Safety. We work closely with industry professionals to improve the safety of refrigeration systems and raise awareness of the risks associated with ammonia equipment.
