Ontario COVID News: Lowest Ventilated Patients since October 2020

Ontario reported 10 net new deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday as the number of patients breathing with a ventilator fell to its lowest point in the month the province first introduced a mask mandate.

The health ministry said seven of the deaths had occurred in the past 30 days, and another three had occurred before that period.

One death is related to a resident in long-term care.

There have been 49 deaths in the last seven days, 342 in the last 30 days and a total of 13,314.

Hospitals reported 549 COVID-19-positive patients admitted, up 27 from Wednesday, down 121 from last week.

Of these, 118 were in intensive care, four more than on Wednesday, but one reduction since then last week.

Forty-four patients breathed with the help of a ventilator, the lowest total population of COVID-19 patients observed in the province since October 19, 2020.

On Wednesday, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore said the mandate for masks for public transport and hospitals would expire on June 11th.

Ontario first introduced a mandate for a mask in closed public places on October 2, 2020.

Various hospitals have said they will continue to require masks after that date.

UHN Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr Isak Bogoch said the public needs to understand that there may be a future reintroduction of mask rules if conditions worsen, especially this autumn.

“There will be peaks and valleys of COVID-19, we expect to see an increase in cases in autumn and winter, and you can expect the recommendations to change at a time when other settings may ask people to put masks back,” he told CP24. .

The positive trend in Ontario continues, writes the Science Advisory Table, citing data from wastewater monitoring showing a declining viral signal in all regions of the province.

Of the 907 cases confirmed Thursday by PCR testing, 87 involved unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people, 141 included people with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, 541 included people with three or more doses, and the vaccination status of 138 others is unknown. .

Provincial laboratories processed 9,777 samples for the test in the previous 24-hour period, generating a positivity rate of 6.6 percent.

The average weekly positivity fell from 8.3% last week to 7.1% this week.

The health ministry said 13,556 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were given on Wednesday.

Of these, 807 were first doses, 985 were second doses, 1608 were third doses, and 10,156 were fourth doses.

The numbers used in this story are in the Ontario Department of Health’s daily epidemiological summary COVID-19. The number of cases for each city or region may differ slightly from that reported by the province, as local units report figures at different times.
