Our Top 5 Amazon Prime Day Chromebook Deal Predictions

When it comes to low-cost, high-value laptops, nothing beats a good Chromebook for value for money. Thanks to their lower specs, Chromebooks are able to remain much more affordable than other laptops with more powerful specs running more stable operating systems like Windows 11 and Apple MacOS 12 Monterey

With just days to go before the Amazon Prime Day deals hit the streets at midnight on July 12, there will be some incredible deals on everything from air fryers to computers. With so many products potentially getting a significant price cut, many shoppers looking for a new laptop will be torn between getting the best Windows laptop they can afford and the siren song of an insanely cheap Chromebook.

So how can laptop shoppers figure out what the best Amazon Prime Day laptop deals are for them? With such a high probability that they will go on sale, what should shoppers be on the lookout for on Prime Day itself?

We’ve already laid out some of our Amazon Prime Day laptop deal predictions for this year, but now we want to zoom in on Chromebooks specifically, as they’re expected to be a very hot item on Prime Day. So we’re going out on a limb again and giving you our top five Amazon Prime Day Chromebook deal predictions to help you find the best Chromebook deals you can and hopefully walk away from him without slapping us.

1. We’ll be buried in Chromebook deals

For both work and play, few things match the performance and affordability of a good Chromebook, and the best Chromebooks for students—and even some higher-performance enterprise Chromebooks—are also some of Prime Day’s best-selling items .

Because they start at such an affordable price (generally speaking), getting a Chromebook deal on Prime Day can often net you significant savings, which means an already cheap laptop becomes an even bigger steal.

And because they’re priced so low, retailers are making sure to push these Chromebooks as much as they can because they need them to sell in enough volume to make the price cut worthwhile. With the school year winding down, many unsold Chromebook education devices now have to go somewhere else to make room for next year’s inventory. And since supply is generally higher, the selling price for these Chromebooks will generally drop even further.

This is definitely something you’ll want to take advantage of while shopping for a new laptop in a few days.

2. Don’t expect too much of a price cut

While Amazon Prime Day will be a great time to pick up a Chromebook, you should also keep the sale prices in perspective.

Chromebook deals will be plentiful if past experience is any indication, but that doesn’t mean retailers will be selling at a loss. If you see a 25% off Chromebook this weekend that you really like, don’t be afraid to buy it and take advantage of this deal.

The prices of some Chromebooks will be reduced by over 50% or more, but these will usually be deals on Chromebooks that were already cheap to begin with, or were very overpriced and have come back down to Earth and reasonable prices. Most trades will probably be in the 20-30% range, and holding out for an even bigger price cut could result in a complete loss of the trade.

3. Fewer premium Chromebook offerings this year

While Amazon Prime Day Chromebook deals are usually a great way to pick up a premium Chromebook, I wouldn’t expect to see many this week.

There have been some pretty cool experiments with premium Chromebooks like the Google Pixelbook Go and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 in recent years, but in the last two years they’ve become much more rare.

First, there’s a global chip shortage that makes any silicon you can get your hands on more valuable. I love a good Chromebook, but manufacturers will move to higher-margin electronics in this environment, and even the best premium Chromebooks won’t come back enough to use a Core i5 or even a more powerful chip in this environment.

Second, as much fun as a premium Chromebook is, there aren’t many things you can really put all that power into. Sure, Chromebooks have access to the entire Google Play store, but none of the games on Google Play push the boundaries of what today’s technology can do.

Without a really good reason to justify them, premium Chromebooks are really too ahead of their time right now. Their time may be drawing near, but it won’t be Prime Day 2022.

4. Cheap 2-in-1s will be the big Prime Day Chromebook deals

After the last few years, we have seen how education and technology have become so intertwined that it is almost unimaginable to think of schools going back to plain old textbooks and sheets of paper.

The fact is that educational laptops are here to stay, and as students progress in their education, their technology will need to keep up with the new demands. The best 2-in-1 Chromebooks have been some of the best sellers in the entire PC market since 2020 and even a little before, and the value that the hybrid laptop-tablet configuration adds to the product becomes impossible to underestimate.

The trend is only going to accelerate, and now that the school year is over, retailers will likely want to clear out all of last year’s 2-in-1 Chromebooks to make room for this year’s models, and Prime Day is a great way to do that.

5. Expect to see some surprisingly powerful offerings

Wait, didn’t I just say premium Chromebooks are on hold for now?

Yes, I sure did, because I’m not talking about a premium Chromebook, but a workhorse Chromebook that has a regular look, 8GB of RAM, and an AMD Ryzen or Intel Core series.

No, we shouldn’t expect Core i7-12700Hs yet, but a Core i3? Absolutely, and for a Chromebook, the Core i3 is a high-end component. Likewise, 8GB of RAM and a PCIe SSD. These used to be rare during Chromebook sales, but there are so many Chromebooks with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD that this is increasingly becoming the type of Chromebook to go for when looking for great Prime Day Chromebook deals .

While these specs may struggle with a more robust Windows 11 operating system, for Chromebooks these types of specs will absolutely blow performance and even serious multimedia workloads. So unless someone is offering a 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC Chromebook with a MediaTek chip from three or four years ago for $50, look past some of those eye-popping dollar figures.

Instead, look for three key specs before you even look at the price: 10th Gen Core i3s or better, 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and a 128GB PCIe SSD or larger. Find a good cheap Chromebook with these specs and you’ll have a great laptop that will last you through the rest of this decade.
