Overwatch 2 will launch “early access” on October 4, Activision Blizzard announced on Sunday. At least the PVP parts of it will be. And in a big change, it will be free to play – the original Overwatch was a paid title. It will be released on PC, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
“We can’t wait to launch the Overwatch 2 experience on October 4 and present an exciting new competitive vision that includes amazing new content and rethinking of the iconic characters, maps and gameplay that made the original game so addictive,” said Mike Ibara, president of Blizzard. , in a press release. “This is the beginning of an ongoing and ever-evolving era for the franchise, as well as a commitment to serve players with frequent and significant updates planned for the future to keep Overwatch 2 fresh and fun for many years to come.”
Blizzard also introduced the second new character for Overwatch 2, Junker Queen, which the company describes as “a highly mobile and rail-armed former captain of Overwatch with cyber capabilities.”
The company plans to share more about Overwatch 2 in a live show for “event discovery”, which takes place in just a few days – you can watch it on June 16 at 13:00 ET.
Blizzard first announced Overwatch 2 in 2019, but it has really started to show the game seriously in the last few months, including a closed beta version. The company has divided the development of PVP and PVE parts of the game. While the PVP element will be available on October 4, we still do not know when the PVE part will be available.
Microsoft is ready to acquire Activision Blizzard in a deal worth nearly $ 70 billion, although the acquisition is not expected to be completed by Microsoft’s fiscal year 2023, which begins in July.
