Getting fired is never fun, but it’s even worse when you find out via a tweet. Sang-min “Myunb0ng” Seo, a support player for New York’s Overwatch League team, found out he won’t be participating in the games this week or next when his organization said goodbye to him in a tweet. Roster changes in the OWL are usually announced via tweet, so this wasn’t unusual. The problem is, it seems no one told Seo about his release in advance. He responded to the farewell tweet with question marks, looking confused.

He also quotes the message with another question mark, seemingly confirming the idea that he didn’t know this was coming.

This particular revelation inspires a big ol’ whoop, because a few hours before they tweeted about Seo’s release, the New York Excelsior tweeted a welcome to their newest support player, Soon-jae “Ansoonjae” Jae. So, Seo apparently saw the message and was in the process of meeting a comrade from the support line, not knowing that said comrade would be taking his place. damn it
The New York Excelsior apologized on Wednesday for the situation. “Today we posted a message thanking Myunb0ng for his time with us, but we were unable to properly communicate with the team before this announcement was made,” the team wrote on Twitter. “We take full responsibility and there are no excuses. To Myunb0ng, we are deeply sorry for our miscommunication and putting you in this situation.
Fans reacted to Seo’s tweets with shock, hoping this wasn’t how a player really found out about his release. But even if that was the case, Seo wouldn’t be in bad company. There are many stories in meat sports where players learn of a drop or trade via a tweet and a host of other unpleasant ways. It still kind of stings though.
