Pandemic travel: How Canadian airlines cut flights

Two of Canada’s largest airlines have announced steps to deal with delays, canceled flights and service issues.

On Wednesday night, Air Canada said it would make adjustments to flights over the next two months to address “deficiencies in customer service.” And on Thursday, WestJet confirmed it was adopting a “very measured” strategy to maintain services this summer.

Here’s what the two airlines announced.

AIR CANADA

Air Canada sent an email to customers Wednesday evening announcing a reduction in flights the airline will offer in July and August.

In a statement emailed to CTV News Channel, an Air Canada spokesperson said the company will reduce its schedule by an average of 154 flights per day for July and August. Air Canada previously said it operates about 1,000 flights a day.

The company said the most affected routes were flights to and from hubs in Toronto and Montreal. Air Canada will reduce the frequency of these flights over the summer, primarily affecting the evening and late evening flights of the airline’s smaller aircraft.

Air Canada is also suspending three routes this summer. The spokesman said the airline would temporarily suspend routes between Montreal and Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Kelowna and Toronto and Fort McMurray.

International flights will remain mostly unaffected, except for schedule changes that the spokesman said will reduce peak-hour flights and improve the flow of passengers to those destinations.

While Air Canada president Michael Russo acknowledged in the email to customers that this will have a “negative impact” on some passengers, he said he hopes the notice will allow passengers to make other arrangements for their summer travel plans.

WESTJET

In a statement posted on its website on Thursday, WestJet said it would also operate fewer flights to ensure the company “can provide stable operations”.

WestJet says it will operate 25 percent fewer flights this summer, reducing its service from an average of 700 flights a day to an average of 530 flights a day.

The airline’s statement also said the company conducts “extensive planning” to ensure its flights “all fly at peak performance”.
