Details of the new look are being kept under wraps, with only a handful of players in on the secret. Chin feared he dropped something recently in the locker room during a conversation with cornerback Jaycee Horn that almost caused too much excitement.
“There are a lot of people who don’t even know,” Chin said. “I said something to Jaycee and he said, ‘What, we got black helmets?'” “Yeah, but don’t tell anybody. If you don’t know, I don’t think you should.”
“It’s going to be a big deal for a lot of people.”
There will be a few contrasts, such as the league-mandated white chinstraps and small bumpers on the top of the helmet visor, as well as the numbers and accent stripes on the jerseys. But black on black is something the Panthers have never been able to utilize. In previous years, teams were not allowed to wear alternate helmets at all, with the NFL requiring them to use one type for the entire season. Those rules were relaxed this year, and the Panthers will wear them once a season, so a prime-time appearance against a division rival seemed like the perfect time.
And if fans can tap into the all-black look in the stands under a near-full moon, when there might be a bit of a chill in the air, Burns thinks it could make for an unforgettable night at Bank of America Stadium.
