The partial remains of a Calgary woman who was reported missing more than five years ago have been found, police said, and a woman suspected of killing her has been charged.
Tammy Doreen Howard, who also went by the name Irish, was last heard from on December 24, 2016. Her family reported her missing in April 2017.
She was 49 when she disappeared. In July, Calgary police said that after tireless efforts to find answers to her disappearance, she was believed to be the victim of a homicide.
On Wednesday, police said they had found her partial remains.
“Over the past five years, our missing persons investigators have followed leads and dug into evidence in an effort to locate the Irishman who we believe was killed in a particularly violent manner,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Lee Treat in a message.
“We are saddened to share that despite DNA processing, we have found and identified partial Irish remains and are continuing to search for additional remains.”
Police said Natalie Renee Vigne, 36, of Calgary, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the case. Vine remains in custody and will appear in court on August 19.
“We have reason to believe that the defendant did not act alone and we continue to seek answers in this homicide investigation,” Treat said in the release.
The investigation into Howard’s death is ongoing and police said they have reason to believe her remains may be located east of Calgary. Search teams are currently exploring a large area of terrain within the territory of the Siksika Nation.
