Clothing company Patagonia said on Friday it would pay bail for employees protesting peacefully for “reproductive justice”.
News Movement: The Supreme Court overturned Rowe v. Wade earlier Friday, giving states powers to regulate and ban abortions. The decision provoked mass protests in front of the Supreme Court building, and more rallies are planned in the United States this weekend.
Details: Patagonia said in a statement that US part-time and “full-time workers protesting peacefully for reproductive justice” receive both training and bail if necessary.
- Employees of the company’s health plan are covered for abortion care, which includes payment for travel, accommodation and food, where restrictions currently exist, the company said.
- Patagonia spokesman JJ Huggins told Axios that the company “has been accepting a warranty policy for many years”.
- “The company will pay bail for an employee who previously attended a class for nonviolent civil disobedience and was subsequently arrested while protesting peacefully,” he said.
What they say: “Employee care extends beyond basic health insurance, so we take a more holistic approach to coverage and support for the overall well-being to which everyone is entitled,” the company said.
- “This means offering employees the dignity of access to reproductive health.”
The big picture: US companies have announced plans to help employees gain access to reproductive care following a Supreme Court ruling Friday.
- Disney, Meta, Reddit and the Discord gaming chat platform have announced they will help their employees find reproductive health coverage.
- Many corporations said in May, when a draft U.S. Supreme Court ruling expired, that they would help employees cover the abortion trip as well.
