“Our focus on Tuesday is on our families who have lost loved ones,” Mayor Don McLaughlin said in a statement Monday. “Tomorrow we will start burying our children, the innocent victims of last week’s murders at Rob Elementary School. The special meeting of the Municipal Council will not be held on schedule. “
During the massacre, the children in the classrooms repeatedly called 911, asking for help.
At a news conference Friday, Texas Public Security Director Col. Stephen McCro confirmed that the Uwalde school district police chief was the officer who decided not to break into classrooms – although McCrow did not identify Aredondo by name. .
“Pete Aredondo was duly elected to the Municipal Council,” the mayor continued. “There is nothing in the City Charter, the Electoral Code or the Texas Constitution that forbids him from taking the oath. As far as we know, we are not currently aware of Mr Aredondo’s investigation.”
Arredondo has almost three decades of law enforcement experience, according to the school district.
The school district board approved Aredondo to head the department in 2020. The district’s chief, Hal Harel, said in a Facebook post at the time that the board was “confident in our choices and impressed with his experience, knowledge and community involvement.” “
In March, Aredondo posted on Facebook that his department was hosting Active Shooter Training at Uvalde High School in an attempt to prepare local law enforcement agencies to respond to “any situation that may arise.”
The justice ministry announced on Sunday that it would review the law enforcement response to the mass shooting.
