Pharma Bro convict Martin Shkreli was released from federal prison on Wednesday, less than five years after a seven-year sentence, his lawyer said.
“I am pleased to announce that Martin Shkreli has been released from Allenwood Prison and transferred to the BOP in half after completing all programs to reduce his prison sentence,” his lawyer, Ben Brafman, said in a statement.
Brafman added that he had advised Shkreli not to make any more statements while he was halfway through the house.
A spokesman for FCI Allenwood, a federal security prison in Pennsylvania where Shkreli is being held, confirmed the release and told The Post that Shkreli was expected to be released from New York State in mid-September.
Shkreli was convicted in 2017 of investing in a series of his hedge funds.
At the time, he was already a notorious figure in the rise in the price of the antiparasitic drug Daraprim as CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals in 2015.
The drug, which is used to treat infections that occur in patients suffering from cancer and AIDS, jumped in price overnight.
One pill rose from $ 13.50 to $ 750 – a staggering 5,500 percent increase.
At the time, Shkreli was advocating rising prices as labor capitalism.
Since then, Shkreli has been banned from working in the pharmaceutical industry again. He was also ordered to return the $ 64 million in profits his company had accumulated.
Despite his notoriety, Shkreli’s release was hailed by some on the Internet.
A man named Edmund Sullivan shared a photo on Twitter announcing Shkreli’s freedom.
“I stopped this man. He says he is famous, “he wrote, along with an image of the former detainee in the back seat of a car.
