Phil Mickelson feels uncomfortable during the LIV Golf grill at the US Open

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts – Phil Mickelson stood behind a temporary background wall in a small tent for an open-air interview for this week’s US Open two minutes before his scheduled press conference at 1:00 p.m. before Monday’s tournament is interrupted at some point.

“No,” Mickelson told the clerk. “We can continue for as long as necessary. I understand that (reporters) have a lot of questions. “

And so began Mickelson’s 51-year-old second burn in six days from reporters looking for answers as to why he chose to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, a decision that led to his removal from the PGA. Take a tour with 16 other players who played in the first event of the tour last week.

Last Wednesday, before the LIV tour in London, Mickelson came out of his four-month exile and was filled with politically charged questions about his $ 200 million union with the Saudis and where the money came from.

On Monday, a few miles west of downtown Boston ahead of this week’s US Open, Mickelson faced a familiar scene and it seemed as awkward to him as last week’s session outside London.

Mickelson began with an introductory statement, saying: “Four months have passed … it was a necessary time and opportunity for me to step back a little and put in a little thought and reflection on how to move forward and how best to prioritize things. This gave me the opportunity to spend time with (his wife) Amy, spend time with loved ones and continue some of the occupational therapy on some of the shortcomings I certainly have, as well as focus on the best way forward. It was a positive time in this regard.

“I know that many of you have strong – well, many people – have strong opinions, emotions about my choice to move forward with LIV Golf. I understand and respect that. “

One of the urgent topics Mickelson was asked about was the letter he and other LIV Golf players received from families on September 11 condemning their decision to join the Saudis, as 15 of the 19 kidnappers are on this side.

“I would tell all those who have lost loved ones, lost friends on 9/11, that I have a deep, deep empathy for them,” Mickelson said. “I can’t stress that enough. I feel the deepest sympathy and empathy for them. “

Mickelson was asked if he was concerned that his legacy would be damaged by his relocation to the LIV tour.

“I have been a part of PGA TOUR for more than 30 years and I enjoy my time,” he said. “I enjoyed the opportunities it gave me. I enjoyed the way of life he gave me. I enjoyed the fact that playing golf through the PGA Tour was able to give me and my family so much. I appreciate that fact.

“During this time, I worked really hard behind the scenes, as well as trying to contribute as a way to show my gratitude and do the best I can to give it back. So … I feel good about the effort I put in to try to get back on the golf course as well as the Tour, and I’m excited about the opportunity that LIV Golf offers for me and the golf game going forward.

“I did my best to contribute to the game, to contribute to the PGA TOUR during my stay with them, and that’s all I can do.”

Phil Mickelson turned to reporters at Monday’s US Open after playing in the first LIV Golf event near London this weekend.

Asked if he was worried that his huge popularity among fans had been damaged and what his reaction would be if his fans turned their backs on him, Mickelson said: “As for whether the fans will leave or not, I respect and understand their opinion, and I understand that they have strong feelings and strong emotions regarding this choice, and I certainly respect them (and I respect that). ”

Mickelson has made it clear that he prefers not to be alienated from the PGA Tour, hoping to one day continue playing PGA Tour events as well as LIV Golf events.

“I worked hard to win a lifelong membership. “I’ve worked hard to bring the PGA Tour and golf back to my 30 or more years of professional golf, and I won this lifetime membership, so I believe it should be my choice,” Mickelson said. “It’s quite public that I’ve been eliminated along with a bunch of other players, so it would only be speculative in the future. I will play in the LIV events, I will play in the British Open (next month), but anything else would be pure speculation. I do not know how all this will develop.

“My preference is to be able to choose which path I would like, one or the other, or both. I returned as much to the PGA Tour and golf as I could in my 30 years here, and through my achievements on the course, I won a lifelong membership. I intend to keep this and then choose which events to play in the future and not. “

Mickelson was asked what attracted him to the LIV Golf series.

“There’s an obvious incredible financial commitment, but more than that – for all the players involved and all the players involved – there are other factors (like) fewer tournaments, it allows me to have more balance in my life,” he said. “It allows me to do things that are outside the golf course I’ve always wanted to do. I find that by prioritizing those who are important to me, the people who are important to me going forward, it allows me to have more time with them, attend more, and share more life experiences outside of golf.

“I believe there are many things about LIV Golf that are transformative,” Mickelson continued. “Two in particular are a uniquely different format from a format that has been the same for half a century or more, and I believe that moving tournaments around the world and bringing this type of golf championship to different parts of the world will have a very positive effect. impact on sport worldwide. “

Asked how he felt about the “beatings” he has endured since joining LIV Golf, Mickelson said: there is. “

Mickelson did not leave until he was asked about his new appearance, with thin hair on his face that we had never seen in public.

“Amy liked him, so as long as she likes him, he’s here,” he said. “When she says she’s gone, she’s gone.”
