Westminster SNP leader Ian Blackford said “Scotland’s first minister has set a date and launched a campaign” after Nicolas Sturgeon proposed a new independence referendum yesterday. He said the referendum would take place on October 13, 2023.
He says the Westminster government is violating international law and dealing poorly with the day’s problems. “In the coming weeks and months, we will make positive arguments for independence,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Dominique Raab said it was “not the right time for a new referendum, given the challenges we face as a United Kingdom”. He says the people of Scotland want “their two governments to work together”.
Blackford says the government “has no right to block Scottish democracy” and says the leader of the Scottish Conservatives has previously said that more votes for the SNP means another vote for independence, which Scottish voters then did.
Deputy Prime Minister Dominique Raab says Blackford is a “history of airbrushing” and that Scots suffer a “huge tax burden” and Scotland has schools with poorer results than England and Wales.
He says he thinks Scotland deserves better.
