Police are warning residents after a wolf escaped from its enclosure near Port Colburn.
The female arctic wolf was rescued from northern Ontario, police said, and dug out of her enclosure Tuesday morning.
Investigators say they have received numerous reports of sightings near Main Street West and Cement Road and are trying to track down the animal.
They urge citizens not to go looking for the wolf.
“Forcing an interaction can result in a negative outcome for both the human and the wolf,” the Niagara Police Service said in a news release issued Wednesday. “Pressuring the wolf can also cause it to flee, making it difficult to capture.”
“The public in the area is advised to be aware of their personal safety and that of their pets.”
Anyone who sees the wolf is asked to contact the Niagara SPCA at 905-735-1552, extension three, or contact Niagara Police.
