Colombian superstar Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique announced on Saturday that they have been looking for time for their relationship for more than a decade.
The 45-year-old “Hips don’t Lie” singer is one of the biggest names in the global music industry and has sold over 60 million albums.
The 35-year-old Spanish football hero Pique won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012 and is a three-time Champions League winner with Barcelona.
The couple shares two sons and has lived together on the outskirts of Barcelona for years.
“We are sorry to confirm that we are separating. “For the well-being of our children, who are our top priority, we want respect for (our) privacy,” they said in a statement.
With her mix of Latin and Arabic rhythms and rock influence, the three-time Grammy winner Shakira is one of Latin America’s biggest stars, celebrating big world hits with songs such as “Hips don’t Lie” and “Whenever, Wherever”.
In 2020, she starred with Jennifer Lopez in the half-time show of the NFL Super Bowl Finals in Miami, usually one of the most watched half-hours on American television.
The couple announced their separation just over a week after Spanish court documents brought Shakira to court in Spain for tax fraud after a court in Barcelona rejected the singer’s appeal.
Spanish prosecutors accuse her of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of 14.5 million euros ($ 15.5 million) in income earned between 2012 and 2014.
She is said to have moved to Spain in 2011, when her relationship with Pique became public, but she retained her official tax residence in the Bahamas until 2015.
Her lawyers say she moved to Spain full-time only in 2015 and insist that her “tax conduct has always been flawless in all the countries where she has had to pay taxes”.
In an interview with AFP in 2019, Shakira said the temporary loss of her voice two years earlier had been “the darkest moment of her life” and had affected her “deeply”.
She later regained her voice naturally without having to undergo surgery, as recommended by doctors, and subsequently toured the world in 2018.
