The British Columbia government has confirmed that Haida Gwaii’s Queen Charlotte Village will be renamed back to its former ancestral name.

The village council tabled a motion to revert to the name Daajing Giids, pronounced DAW’-jing-GEEDS’, after nearly half the residents approved the change, prompting a unanimous vote by councillors.

Municipal Affairs Minister Nathan Cullen said in a release that place names matter and he commended the council for working with the Haida Nation to deliver an important act of reconciliation.

Village Mayor Chris Olsen says the name change is a gift and an opportunity to make things right and show respect for the Haida Nation.

He says the council has accepted its responsibility and come out on the right side of a historic moment.

Olsen said Daajing Giids means common hat settlement or Haida working hat.
