R Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison
R&B singer R Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being sentenced in federal court last year on charges of sexual trafficking and racketeering. He confronted seven of his prosecutors in court today, who gave statements to the victim, telling about his experiences with the singer.
Prosecutors urged him to get more than 25 years behind bars to “protect the public” from the singer. He was convicted on nine counts last September, including one racketeering and eight violations of the Mann Act.
Gloria Allred, who represents the three women who testified against R. Kelly, told reporters that “no one can undo the harm done to these victims.”
Defense attorneys representing R. Kelly hope that details revealing their client’s own abuse as a child will lead the judge to suggest a lighter sentence for the singer.
They called for a sentence of 10 years or less, arguing that anything beyond that would be indefensible. Lawyers say the prosecution’s desire to imprison the 55-year-old singer for 25 years is “tantamount to a life sentence”.
