Rafael Varane sealed Manchester United’s easy victory over Brentford Premier League

There are only two ways in which Manchester United can alleviate this miserable season. Win the last three games and, if not, at least play some sparkling things that offer hope for the future along the way. Tonight, they completed the first part of the mission to get all their available endpoints, and also the second: it was as good as Ralph Rangnik’s team performed during his interim leadership.

It was crowned with a goal by Rafael Varane in the 72nd minute from a corner, 60 seconds before leaving the constituency, dissatisfied with the Glaser family. This is not seen in the figures that the organizers had hoped for: a sure sign of how the product on the field delights home fans.

However, United can still finish with a new lowest total of points in the Premier League and during this term they had three managers and hired a newcomer – Eric ten Haag. Unless it is almost a miracle, there will be no Champions League qualifiers and the post-match “gratitude” tour after this final trip home has certainly been one that has certainly embarrassed all players.

Game 27 of Ranknik’s troubled midterm term began with XI, which prompted Juan Mata to start the first league this year, replacing Marcus Rashford, another sign of his star’s downfall. Cristiano Ronaldo, of course, improved his reputation after returning to the English game and it came as no surprise when he stepped in behind Brentford’s back guard and hit a sweet cross by Diogo Dalot. But now came the collector’s item: usually Clinical Number 7 passed David Raya and slipped, letting visitors get away.

It came after Thomas Frank’s side nearly scored just three seconds after the opening kick when Brian Mbeumo ran into a laser-like pass from Christian Eriksen, and Alex Teles’ challenge saved United from the worst. A throw followed, a corner on the right and one on the left for Brentford, United continued to struggle to clear. This seems to bode well for visitors.

But then the hosts hit. Dalot is a certain force when moving in space in front of his right back zone. He found Anthony Elanga, and what happened next was the 100-mile move desired by United enthusiasts. The winger threw forward and pulled the ball back through Paradise to attack Fernandez to score at home for his 10th league goal of the season.

Frank instructed his players to be “cool” and they proved steadfast. Eriksen hit a 20-yard line that David de Gea needed two attempts to catch, as Rico Henry’s looting shattered United’s precarious defense. A raid caused the left flank back to feed the effervescent Eriksen, and when he dropped the ball to Ivan Tony’s head, a more ruthless finish could equalize.

In the middle of half a verse or three, “Get up if you hate Glaser” was answered by many supporters who rose to their feet in what became a familiar sight in the 17 years of American ownership. However, there was a happier atmosphere around the stadium, simply because United were winning and spinning as players who were far from infamous. Mata was one of the leaders of this gang, his clever game included one or two with Ronaldo, which ended with the Spaniard’s blow only slightly wide.

Ronaldo thought he had doubled United’s lead after shooting a Mata cross before half-time, but its completion was canceled after a VAR check. At the break, it was a competition of two attractive attacks against two dubious defenses.

Further proof of this came when Eriksen – certainly worth looking at as a summer free transfer to United – took a free kick across the dormant United to Tony, who had to do better with a volley.

Ten Hag’s work must begin with the players defending De Gea, as initially against the column showed 52 goals conceded – the worst record of the first nine divisions. That number includes goals scored from the midfield, of course. Eriksen’s movement from the region forced Nemanja Matic to pull the intriguer down. Eriksen’s free-kick attempt was one of those volatile, ballball affairs, and De Gea had to cleverly move his legs and arms to repel it.

But now it’s Ronaldo’s turn. Dalot’s ball flew to his right, but he threw his shoulder to Henry and flew into the area. The defender’s answer was to beat Ronaldo and Christopher Cavanagh pointed out the place. The Portuguese broke the penalty for his 18th goal of the season in the league and United cruised.

Towards the end, Brentford scoffed at “where did your protest go?” In a lost United campaign, it was a compliment from a backhand: the hosts impressed once.
