Rain and strong winds are expected to hit southwest BC, according to Environment Canada

An unusually strong low-pressure system is heading southwestern British Columbia, carrying strong winds, torrential rain and snow at higher altitudes.

Environment Canada has issued special weather forecasts for the entire Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Whistler, Howe Sound, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Metro.

The storm is expected to bring up to 60 millimeters of rain in some of these areas.

Freezing levels will also drop to 1,100 meters, meaning mountain passes will be covered in snow, according to Environment Canada.

Up to 10 centimeters of snow is expected to fall on Kokihala and Highway 3 from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, according to a special weather statement, and up to five centimeters is expected to fall at night on the Trans-Canadian Highway.

Strong southeast winds will shift to the southwest as the cold front passes on Wednesday, but the meteorological service says there is some uncertainty about the path of the storm.

Wind warnings are in effect for the western and northern parts of Vancouver Island, with winds of 80 km / h expected with gusts up to 100 km / h on Wednesday morning. Open coastal sections can see gusts of up to 110 km / h, Environment Canada reported.
