RCMP confirm the death of missing 5-year-old Frank Young

Police and the chief of the Red Earth Cree Nation confirmed that the body of five-year-old Frank Young was found on Saturday near the area from which he was first reported missing.

Frank was last seen on April 19 playing outside the home where he lived with his aunt and uncle on the Red Earth Cree Nation, about 300 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon.

Despite an extensive land, air and boat search of the community and surrounding area, the boy has not been seen since that day.

“At this time, there are no indications of suspicious circumstances,” RCMP said in a media release Sunday.

“But because it was just discovered, further investigative steps will be taken, including working in partnership with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Office and an autopsy will be performed.”

Officers received a report around 7:06 p.m. Saturday that Frank was found dead in a river on the Red Earth Cree Nation, according to RCMP.

Police say Frank’s family has been notified.

“No one wanted the search for Frank to end this way,” said Sgt. Richard Tonge, commander of the Carrot River RCMP detachment, said in the news release.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Frank’s family, loved ones and community who have been greatly affected by this tragedy.”

Red Earth Cree Nation Chief Fabian Head confirmed Frank’s discovery – in the water on Red Earth Cree Nation – on social media shortly after midnight on Sunday.

Members of the RCMP Tactical Unit and volunteers from the Red Earth and Shoal Lake Cree Nations focused on the Carrot River after the spring thaw.

The Carrot River originates in Lake Wakaw and flows northeast through the Red Earth Plains into the Saskatchewan River near Pass, Man.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the opening of Frank Young on Saturday, July 9,” Head wrote on Facebook.

“We will hold a media conference and then we will release more information. For now, we ask for your prayers and continued support during our time of grief.”
