RCMP, IIO BC investigate man shot at Campbell yacht

The RCMP and the Office of Independent Investigation of British Columbia are investigating a man who was shot dead after an alleged hostage situation at a marina in the Campbell River.

The BC RCMP says the Campbell River RCMP has received reports of a murder at the Discovery Harbor marina located at 2,300 blocks of Spit Road, with additional hostages being held at the scene.

Police and members of the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators responded.

“Officers confirmed the safety of the hostages and contacted the suspect,” the RCMP said in a statement. “Attempts have been made to negotiate with the man who is reportedly in possession of a weapon.

IIO BC says that when the officers arrived at the scene, there were no more hostages.

A spokesman for the IIO BC told CHEK News that police officers had fired and an IIO investigation would determine whether anyone other than the police had fired.

The man was pronounced dead on the spot.

IIO BC was notified of the incident and investigators were sent to the scene.
