RCMP investigation closed: Prosecutors have report of fatal Icefield overturning

The final report of the RCMP on the fatal overturning of an all-terrain bus in the ice field of Colombia in the Rocky Mountains is in the hands of prosecutors.

Three people were killed and 14 others received life-threatening injuries after the red-and-white Ice Explorer lost control on its way to the Athabasca Glacier, about 100 kilometers southeast of Jasper, Alta, on July 18, 2020.

The bus with 27 people on board rolled about 50 meters down the moraine before stopping on its roof.

The RCMP did not release its report in the rollover. It was originally promised until the spring of last year, after which it was postponed until the fall.

“The main part of our investigation has been completed and is currently before the Alberta Crown Prosecutor’s Office for review,” said Capt. This was said by Troy Savinkov on Wednesday.

“They have it. It is difficult to say a timeline. It is rather dynamic.

The crown will determine whether the evidence justifies any criminal charges.

On this day, there are two civil lawsuits filed on behalf of people on the bus. Some plaintiffs expressed concern about the delay in finding out what had happened.

“Obviously there is a great public interest in this particular investigation – and rightly so. “I can certainly understand why people want answers,” Savinkov said.

“Several years have passed, but these situations are extremely dynamic and we have to do it right the first time. We hope to have the answers that everyone would like in the future. “

The tours of the Ice Field were resumed last year. Seat belts have been added to tourist buses and changes have been made to driver training and road maintenance.
