Three were killed and one was seriously injured in a mass shooting in Maryland
Three people were killed and four injured in a shooting at a manufacturing base in Smithsburg, Maryland, authorities said.
The Washington County Sheriff confirmed the death toll after violence erupted at Columbia Machine on Thursday afternoon.
The suspect was shot and wounded in a clash with a Maryland State police officer, the sheriff’s office said. The shooter was shot in the shoulder, but returned fire, hitting the shooter, who was hospitalized.
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect was identified as a 23-year-old Spaniard who is also an employee of the facility. The suspect used a semi-automatic pistol, but the exact caliber, make and model were not disclosed.
“The motive for the shooting is still being investigated and there is no active threat to the community,” the sheriff’s office said.
“On June 9, 2022, around 2:30 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to Columbia Machine Inc., 12912 Bikle Road, Smithsburg, MD for active shooter reports,” the department said.

Large board mold maker and repair service provider Columbia Machine, where the shooter shot on Thursday, told The Sun they were working with law enforcement officials.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that earlier today, at around 2.30 pm, there was a shooting at our facility in Smithsburg. “Three of our team members died tragically and one was taken to hospital,” the company said in a statement.
“We are working closely with local authorities while the investigation continues. Our highest priority during this tragic event is the safety and well-being of our employees and their families. “

Second shooting in two days
Thursday’s mass shooting near Smithsburg was the second case of gun violence in Washington County in two days.
A 19-year-old man was shot dead in front of Valley Mall in Halfway on Wednesday, Herald-Mail Media reported.
The defendant, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Stephen Lucabo, was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault.

“Dedicated to meeting your pain with action,” the senator said
Senator Chris Van Hollen said action must be taken to stop the killings following a series of mass shootings that hit the United States last month.

All victims are employees of the institution
The people killed in the mass shooting are all employees of the Columbia Machine, police said.
The victims were identified as Mark Alan Fry, 50; Charles Edward Minick, 31; and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30.
The fourth person who was critically injured was identified as 42-year-old Brandon Chase Michael, said Washington County Sheriff Doug Mulandor.
