  • Kinzinger said it was “pretty crazy” that texts related to Jan. 6 were deleted by the Secret Service.

  • The congressman told CBS News there were conflicting statements from the agency about the texts.

  • On January 6, the commission issued a subpoena to obtain records of the communications.

Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said Sunday that it would be “pretty crazy” if the Secret Service did delete text messages related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

During an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” the Illinois Republican — who along with Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming are the only GOP members on the House committee investigating the riot — told host Margaret Brennan that full details of the situation have not yet been released.

“We will know more on Tuesday,” he said, adding that the panel had issued a subpoena to gain access to the records.

The Secret Service informed the committee that the records could no longer be found due to a switch to a new phone system.

However, Kinzinger noted that the agency’s statements were “very contradictory.”

“They claim it was this technological change, ‘we moved everything, we lost these texts.’ And then they also issued a statement, even though we said we only lost some of the texts and everything related to this investigation was handed over. So these are very controversial statements,” he said on the program. “So we decided as a committee, let’s ask for them by Tuesday and we can make a decision.”

“It’s pretty crazy, to say the least, that the Secret Service would actually erase everything related to one of the most infamous days in American history, especially as it relates to the role of the Secret Service,” he added.
