Republican MP says he would support Trump again if he apologizes for January 6 attack

Representative Tom Rice (RS.C.) said in an interview Sunday that he would consider supporting former President Trump again if Trump apologized for the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

“There is no way to support it [Trump] co-host Jonathan Carl asked Rice, one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach the former president for his role in the uprising, on ABC’s This Week.

“No, there’s a way… if he apologizes,” Rice told Carl.

“So if he came out and said, ‘I’m sorry,’ I mean, it’s all coming out?” Carl Rice asked.

“If he comes out and says, ‘I’m sorry I made a big mistake on January 6.’ Then you can consider it,” Rice said.

Rice, who is also running for re-election in his constituency in November, also said Trump’s impeachment vote was the most “conservative” thing he should do, saying his job was to defend the Constitution.

“And the absolute protection of the Constitution is the basis of the republican platform, isn’t it?” “I defended the constitution, and that’s what I did,” Rice told Carl. “It was the conservative vote.”

“Impeachment was the Conservative vote?” Carl Rice asked.

“Absolutely, it was the Conservative vote,” Rice said. “There’s no question in my mind.”

Rice added that another Trump candidacy for the post in 2024 would hurt the Republican Party.

Rice’s remarks came when a House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6 attack announced last week that it would hold a hearing on Thursday at the best time, adding that it would present unpublished documents and its findings related to the attack.
