Researchers claim that monkeypox mutates more than previously thought

There are currently more than 200 cases of monkeypox and orthopoxvirus confirmed in the United States, and experts warn that the virus has mutated more than previously thought.

In a study published Thursday in the journal Nature Medicine, a group of Portuguese researchers found that there are an average of 50 mutations in samples from 2022 compared to those from 2018 and 2019.

They wrote that the extent of the mutations – found after looking at 15 sequences of the monekypox virus – could suggest a case of “accelerated evolution.”

Genetic analysis earlier this month suggested that there were two different strains in the United States, which increased the virus’s ability to circulate for some time.

Current data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows the majority of cases in California, New York and Illinois.

Kentucky health officials announced the first probable case in the state on Friday.

However, scientists note that the outbreak is potentially much larger than the current number of cases.

The CDC has confirmed that there is evidence of local transmission of monkeypox, in addition to cases where the infected have traveled abroad.

This weekend is the annual Pride Weekend in New York, and some residents told The New York Times they consider the risk of transmitting the monekypox virus.

On Thursday, health officials at the Big Apple expanded access to the monkey measles vaccine.

However, citing high demand, the city-run Sexual Health Clinic in Chelsea – the only facility in New York to administer the vaccine – said it would no longer be able to accept entrants almost immediately and that all meetings were busy until next Monday.

The Biden administration has begun sending tests for the monkeypox virus to commercial laboratories, which the Ministry of Health and Human Services (HHS) said would “dramatically expand testing capacity across the country.”

Although the majority of new cases of monkeypox have been seen in gay or bisexual men, experts warn that everyone is at potential risk.

People usually get up infected with the monkeypox virus by contact with skin lesions or body fluids of infected animals or humans or by contact with materials contaminated with the virus.

Monkeypox, which is associated with smallpox, has milder symptoms.

Some symptoms of monkeypox include fever, chills, rash, and pain before the lesions develop.
