Review of Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield

Portable SSDs have been an ideal solution for storing data for some time and are available not only at different capacity points, but also at the speed at which data moves between the device and the computer to which it is connected. The most common external storage connector remains USB 3.1, which will transfer data at just over 500MB / s, but USB 3.2 Gen 2 seems to be moving in this space with transfer speeds twice as fast as 1GB / s. For these media professionals, we also have the latest USB 3.2 2 × 2, which doubles things up to 2GB / s data transfer, and then Thunderbolt 3/4, which increases things to just under 3GB / s.

It is very important to understand that the device only provides the ability to move data at these speeds, the system, of course, must be compatible with the selected interface to match the speed. A perfect example of this is the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield we’re reviewing today, fully capable of moving data at up to 1GB / s to our latest ASRock Z690 12th Gen test bench or one of our many Thunderbolt 3 ultrabooks on hand. It is very important to note, however, that a Tblt 3/4 compatible system or laptop will only move a portable SSD other than Thunderbolt USB 3.2 at up to 1GB / s, not the maximum 2GB / s described with USB 3.2 2. × 2 portable SSDs. The USB 3.2 2 × 2 interface MUST be paired with this USB 3.2 2 × 2 interface to reach data rates above this 1GB / s.

Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is available in capacities of one and two terabytes and is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 device capable of transferring data at 10Gbps or 1000MB / s. Available in three colors (black, blue and tan), and the contents of the package include T7 itself, USB Type-C cable to Type-C (1GB / s), USB Type-C cable to Type-A (500MB / s) and a very detailed installation guide.

The T7 shield is made of a sealed aluminum shell with a permanently fixed silicone rubber coating, which supports resistance to shocks and weathering. This portable SSD has an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance and is resistant to falls of up to 3 meters. A Type C port can be found on one side of the device with a small LED next to the one that lights up when there is SSD activity.

The stated performance of the SSD is 1050MB / s read and 1000MB / s write with dimensions of 3.5 x 2.3 x .05 inches and weight 3.47 oz. Considering the software, the SSD itself contains Samsung’s Portable SSD 1.0 security software, which works with AES AES 256-bit hardware encryption and provides complete data security in just a few steps.

Equally valuable, but not included in the T7 Shield, is the downloadable Samsung Magician software, which provides a number of support and performance features.

Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield is compatible with Windows, Mac and Android, comes with a 3-year warranty and can be found on Amazon with a discounted price of $ 134 (1TB) and $ 230 (2TB).
