After explosive revelations about the behavior of his staff were uncovered during a committee hearing on Tuesday (January 6th), Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) appears to have falsified a phone call to avoid questions from reporters as he walked away from the Capitol. “I’m talking on the phone right now,” Johnson told NBC News’s Frank Thorpe V in response to a question. “No, you’re not,” Thorpe said. “I see your phone. I see your screen. ” Johnson continued to hold the phone to his ear for a few more seconds before refusing to wake up and engaging with reporters. He was faced with questions after it turned out that his chief of staff had sent an SMS to Mike Pence’s aide to offer an “alternative voter list” backing Trump before Congress officially certified the results of the 2020 election.
