Rory McIlroy shoots Greg Norman after winning his 21st PGA Tour victory

Rory McIlroy had additional motivation to secure his 21st PGA Tour victory in his career at the Canadian Open on Sunday.

After an exciting final round in which he shot 62 to finish the tournament in the 19th floor, McIlroy could not help but point out who he was ahead of in the all-time rankings of the PGA Tour.

“It’s amazing,” McIlroy said in an interview after the game with CBS Sports. “Playing with Tony and JT and we all played the way we did, I think the worst round was 6 less, it’s a day I’ll always remember. My 21st win in the PGA Tour, one more than anyone else, has given me a little extra boost today and I’m happy to end it. “

This someone else is Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf Invitational, who has 20 wins in the PGA Tour. This comes as both McIlroy and Norman exchanged comments on the recently funded Saudi-funded golf series.

McIlroy believed that the LIV Golf Series was not the right tournament compared to the PGA events on the calendar.

“I certainly don’t think the field is something to jump up and down,” McIlroy said at the PGA Tour Memorial Tournament. “Look at the field this week. See the box next week in Canada. These are the right golf tournaments. ”

Norman criticized McIlroy for coming out against LIV Golf, saying he had been “washed out” by the “ruling class of golf” to defend the PGA.

McIlroy secured consecutive titles at the Canadian Open, finishing 19 less in front of a raging crowd at St. Mary’s Golf and Country Club. George’s in Toronto. This was the first tournament in Canada since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 33-year-old is competing in a strong field, including Scotty Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Justin Rose, Corey Connors and Sam Burns. Now McIlroy will prepare for the US Open next week, which will allow LIV golfers to compete, as this is not a PGA event.
