Rwanda’s deportation flight final: UK expected to challenge European Court ruling, minister says

Liz Trus defends Rwanda’s asylum scheme as “completely legal and moral”

A cabinet minister said the government would challenge the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights, which imposed a flight into the Rwandan Interior Ministry last night.

Labor and Pensions Secretary Theresa Coffey said she was “very confident” that the government would be able to continue its policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

“We will return, I am sure, to the ECtHR to challenge this initial decision,” she said.

This comes after Priti Patel said that yesterday’s legal defeats will not prevent her from “doing the right thing”.

The Secretary of State added: “Our legal team is reviewing every decision made on this flight and preparations for the next flight are starting now.

A spokesman for the Rwandan government also said he would not be deterred by successful legal offers on Tuesday.

“Rwanda remains fully committed to this partnership,” said Yolanda Makolo, adding: “Rwanda is ready to accept migrants when they arrive and offer them security and opportunities in our country.”

Cabinet Minister: The United Kingdom will challenge the decision of the European Court

Labor and Pensions Secretary Theresa Kofi said the government would challenge the ECtHR’s decision to cancel their flight to Rwanda last night.

Speaking to Sky News, she said she was not aware of any moves to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights.

“At the moment, I am not aware of any decisions or even hints of this,” she said.

Ms Kofi said she expected the government to challenge the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights late last night, which led to the cancellation of the first deportation flight to asylum seekers in Rwanda.

“The most important thing is that we will deal with this problem right now. We will return, I am sure, to the ECtHR to challenge this initial decision.

She added that she was “very confident” that the government would be able to continue its policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Tory MP blames asylum seekers for shortage of GPs, schools and cheap homes

A Conservative MP has accused asylum seekers of serious problems in the NHS, schools and social housing – 12 years after his party came to power.

Tom Hunt argues that “uncontrolled illegal immigration” is behind the shortage of GPs, schools and cheap homes, as he defended the policy of deporting refugees to Rwanda.

The Ipswich MP was asked if he believed that the huge cost of deportations – kept secret by Priti Patel – was “good value for money”, leaving aside the morality of the scheme.

What is the European Court of Human Rights? Key issues since the flight to Rwanda has been suspended

The court has granted an urgent interim measure against an Iraqi citizen on the flight, and it is understood that it is considering a number of additional requests.

The appeals were heard by a non-working judge on documents, overturning the UK’s decisions on a series of legal challenges before the planned flight.

But what is the European Court of Human Rights?

The Conservative MP called on the United Kingdom to withdraw from the ECHR

Conservative MP Greg Smith has called on the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights after a court ruling stopped a deportation flight to Rwanda at the last minute.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Smith said: “There have been several parliaments of legislation passed at high speed.

“What he showed last night is that we now need the same speed and urgency to introduce a bill on the rights of the United Kingdom and to remove all the powers of the European Court of Human Rights over our sovereign decisions.

David Lamy: The ECtHR protects all our rights

Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lamy said it was “serious” to suggest that the European Court of Human Rights should not look at UK policy.

He told BBC Breakfast: “He protects all our rights, our privacy rights, our rights to work, our rights if we are in a rented accommodation with landlords, all sorts of things that affect our whole lives.

“And it is very serious to assume that these courts should not consider this scheme properly.”

Priti Patel promises that preparations for the next deportation flight “start now”

Responding to news that Rwanda’s flight was blocked late last night by the European Court of Human Rights, Interior Minister Priti Patel promised that “preparations for the next flight begin now”.

She added: “It is very surprising that the European Court of Human Rights intervened despite many previous successes in our national courts. These recurring legal barriers are similar to those we experience on other removal flights, and many of those removed by this flight will be placed on the next one.

She warned: “They will not stop us from doing the right thing and fulfilling our plans to control the borders of our country. Our legal team is reviewing every decision made on this flight and preparations for the next flight begin now. ”
