Sajid Javid visited his mother Zubaida in Bristol and was about to arrive home in London when he received a phone call from his younger brother.
He was told that their older brother, Tariq, had stayed in a five-star hotel in Horsham, West Sussex, just a few miles from his home, with the intention of taking his own life.
Tariq had left two suicidal notes, including one telling Sylvia, his 15-year-old partner, that she should “go on and enjoy life.”
For an hour, 52-year-old Javid, who was interior minister at the time, did not know if his brother had taken his own life or was still alive, but he urgently needed help.
