Sarah Palin is advancing in the special election for a house in Alaska

Former Alaska Gov. and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin will run in the special general election to replace the late MP Don Young (Alaska), according to the Associated Press.

Why it matters: Palin is trying to return to politics after more than a decade out of politics with the support of former President Trump.

News: Palin finished first in the free primary field of dozens of candidates for Young’s successor, who died in March.

  • Nick Begic, a Republican businessman who challenged Young before his death, has also made progress. A study of a prominent democratic political family from Alaska, Begic is positioned as a better alternative to Palin.
  • The third and fourth places in the runoff have not yet been announced.

The state of the game: Until Palin finishes first, it doesn’t matter much for her chances in the general election, which is a competition with four candidates with a ranked choice.

  • This means that the candidates are ranked in order of preference. The candidate with the fewest votes for the first election is eliminated in the first round and their votes are redistributed to the second election of voters.
  • This is a system that observers say would benefit a more moderate candidate, who is generally harmless to most voters, rather than a right-wing favorite like Palin, who is viewed unfavorably by the majority of voters.
