GEORGETOWN, South Carolina County – Authorities have confirmed that the human remains found during a search of a forest off the coast of South Carolina last week were the remains of 17-year-old Brittany Drexel, who went missing from Myrtle Beach in 2009, according to WC .

During a press conference Monday afternoon, the Georgetown County Sheriff also confirmed that an arrest had been made in the case.

Investigators say Raymond Moody, who is in custody, is accused of burying Drexel. Charges include rape, murder and kidnapping, according to officials.

Authorities said last week that the remains were found in Georgetown County during a search Wednesday and Thursday.

Days before the discovery, Moody, who had previously been identified as a person interested in Drexel’s disappearance, was arrested and charged with obstructing justice in Georgetown County.

The crews searched 2.5 miles from the motel where Moody lived at the time Drexel disappeared. Authorities searched the building extensively when they named Moody as a person of interest in Drexel’s disappearance in 2009, WPDE reported.

When Moody lived there, the property was largely undeveloped. The nearby unit was in its infancy.

The teenager from Rochester, New York, disappeared in April 2009 while visiting family members on a trip to Myrtle Beach.
