Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) on Thursday called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (right) “absolute fraud” during a Senate floor speech on a Texas elementary school shooting that killed 19 children. and two adults.
Driving the News: After Beto O’Rourke spoke out against Abbott at a news conference Wednesday in support of his gun rights, Schumer said the governor “asked people to put their programs aside and think of someone other than “My God, how dare he? What an absolute hoax the governor of Texas is.”
- “And this is the same Governor Abbott who tomorrow … will go to speak in [National Rifle Association] Congress in Houston. Governor Abbott, will you ask your MAGA friends and NRA friends to set their agenda aside and think of someone other than themselves, as you asked families to do? … Of course not, “Sumer added.
- “Governor Abbott is more likely to outline some new plan to further loosen arms restrictions. No bloodshed seems to be enough for MAGA Republicans.”
Background: Sumer made remarks before the Senate passed a bill on the Protection of Internal Terrorism Act aimed at combating violent extremism by white supremacists.
- He had scheduled a Senate vote before the shooting in Uwalde, Texas. Instead, the bill is a response to the massacre in Buffalo, New York, which killed 10 people, which the FBI is investigating as a hate crime.
- The bill, which has already passed the House, needs 60 votes in the Senate to be sent to President Biden.
