Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka has retired from Wimbledon after failing to recover from an Achilles’ injury. An update posted on Wimbledon’s official website on Saturday confirmed that world number 43 has been added to the withdrawal list along with Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, who has a shoulder injury.
“My Achilles is still wrong, so I’ll see you next time,” she said later on Twitter. “I feel like life keeps handing out cards and you’ll never get used to them, but how you adapt to awkward situations really says something about your character. I’ve been chanting mantras in my head a lot lately.
“I don’t know whether to subconsciously help myself during stressful moments or to calm my mind to realize that everything will be fine, as long as I work. Because what more can you do? “
Osaka, 24, recently posted a video of herself rehabilitating on a water treadmill, in which she said her Achilles’ heel was “still stubborn.” There were already doubts about whether she would compete in SW19, after saying that playing in the tournament without ranking points made him feel like an “exhibition”.
Osaka also withdrew from Wimbledon last year amid a widely publicized withdrawal from the French Open, after which she carefully chose her races to protect her mental health. She has not played on grass since 2019 and lost a month ago in the first round of the French Open.

At the Queen’s Club, Matteo Berettini reached his fourth consecutive final on grass, defeating the unseeded Dutchman Bottik van de Zandshulp. The title defender kept his hot streak on the grass to win 6-4, 6-3.
The second placed was briefly detained in the second set by a brief delay in the rain, but he returned to serve a break and came away with a victory, finishing the race with a decent drop volley.
The world number 10 reached the final of Wimbledon last year, losing to Novak Djokovic, his only defeat in his last 20 games on grass. The Italian defeated Andy Murray in the final of the Stuttgart Open last Sunday.
The 26-year-old Berettini will be a big favorite in Sunday’s final against Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic, who is taking advantage of the poor performance of double former winner Marin Cilic. Krajinovic, who had never won a grass match before this week, won 6-3, 6-3 against the seventh-placed Croat.
The 30-year-old Krainovic continued to surprise himself as he dismantled Cilic, whose usually strong serve didn’t work. “I don’t like to play on the grass, I usually miss the events on the grass, then I show up and lose in the first round of Wimbledon. But maybe I’m starting to like it, “he said.
