Williams will compete in the singles, according to a report from Wimbledon on Tuesday.
The American also hinted at the long-awaited news: “SW and SW19”, Williams wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “It’s a meeting. 2022, I’ll see you there.” SW19 is the postal code area of south-west London, including Wimbledon, among others.
The post on social media showed her standing on a grass court in white sneakers.
Williams has not played competitively since an injury forced her to retire in a first-round match at Wimbledon last year.
The 23-time grand champion last reached the Wimbledon final in 2019, where she lost to Simona Halep, who now works with former Williams coach Patrick Muratoglu.
Williams will first return to the Eastbourne court next week for LTA’s Rothesay International, pairing up with Tunisia’s first-ranked Ons Jaber for the doubles tournament, her first appearance in nearly a year, according to the tournament.
Widely considered a GOAT in women’s tennis, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams says she is still struggling to beat Margaret Court’s record of 24.
“I had to be 30 or 32 (Grand Slam single titles),” Williams told CNN’s Christian Amanpour earlier this year.
“I should have had it (the record), really, I had a lot of opportunities to have it. But I’m not giving up.”
Williams was forced to miss the Australian Open in January following the advice of her medical team, declaring in December that it was not “where I have to be physically fit to compete”.
Wimbledon is scheduled for June 27 to July 10 at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.
Jill Martin, Alicia Lloyd and Christian Amanpour contributed to the reports.
