Conservative rebels said Boris Johnson’s handling of allegations that his deputy chief whip drunkenly groped two men had boosted their efforts to oust him.

Critics of the prime minister told The times that the scandal involving No 10 and Chris Pincher meant he was more likely to lose support on the Tory backbench committee than in 1922. Rebels want to fill the committee’s executive with MPs who believe Johnson should to be replaced.

Pincher, 52, resigned from the government on Thursday evening and admitted he had “embarrassed myself and other people” at the Carlton Club, a private members’ club in central London, the night before. It took until Friday night for Johnson to pull the whip from Pincher after hearing a
