Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s first appearance for the national team in six years did not disappoint.
The Thunder star exploded for a game-high 32 points in Canada’s convincing 95-75 win over the Dominican Republic. The first SGA game of the summer was an encouraging sign for the young star, ready to prove he belongs among the best in the NBA.
His last game in a Thunder uniform was a 31-point effort against the Celtics back in March. Before the Canadian was injured, he scored over 30 points in seven of nine games. Questions about his injury being ongoing or having any long-term implications were quickly put to rest. He picked up right where he left off, scoring in bunches and heating up from the center.
Gilgeous-Alexander hit five 3-pointers, showing marked improvement in an area where he struggled last season. If he can find his shot, it will make Oklahoma City that much more dangerous next season. He dropped to just 30% from long range last season, with some of that due to the difficulty of the shots taken. SGA drew double teams at an impressive rate and continued to find ways to score.

His improvement in the catch-and-shoot department is critical for the Thunder. The backcourt struggled from under center at times with Josh Giddey and Lu Dort also in the mix, making Gilgeous-Alexander’s jump as a shooter all the more important.
The 24-year-old was also active on defense, recording three steals and two blocks. He was in passing lanes and many of his breaks led to points on the other end. Gilges-Alexander also added five points and five assists while recording a plus-29 on the night.
With the start of the FIBA World Qualifiers and the NBA Summer League, it’s an exciting time to be a Thunder fan. There seems to be talent all over the world to follow along this offseason. Gilgeous-Alexander is locked into Oklahoma City’s core for the long term and has improved every year he’s been in the league. His five-year improvement will determine the direction of the Thunder’s season.
