Sheriff’s deputy hospitalized after being shot in Rancho Cucamonga; suspect in custody

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) — A sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized after he was shot in the Rancho Cucamonga area overnight and a suspect is in custody.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting happened after deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the 5700 block of Sycamore Court around 12 a.m. Sunday.

During a news conference Sunday morning, Sheriff Shannon Discus said the deputy tried to make contact with someone in the vehicle. The suspect then shot the deputy twice.

The deputy, identified only as a five-year veteran of the department, returned fire but did not appear to hit the suspect, identified as Nicholas Campbell.

The deputy was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
