David Chow, 68, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was identified as a suspect Monday by the sheriff’s office.
“He has been charged with one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder,” the department tweeted.
CNN was unable to identify Chow’s lawyer.
At least one person was killed and five were injured – including four who were seriously injured – in a shooting Sunday at the Geneva Presbyterian Church, the sheriff’s office said.
“One victim died at the scene,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office tweeted Sunday.
The shooting took place during a luncheon in honor of a former pastor of a Taiwanese congregation that uses the church for its worship, according to Tom Kramer, leader of the presbytery.
Investigators are working to determine if he has any ties to the church or its followers, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
Police still have no motive, Halok said.
The suspect was detained at the scene after a group of people at the church managed to tie his legs with an extension cord and confiscate at least two pistols from him, Halok said.
Peggy Huang, a former member of the church, said that when the shooter started recharging, churchgoers took action.
“It was an opportunity for the pastor to hit him with the chair, and everyone else collided with him,” she said, quoting an eyewitness.
“This group of church people showed, in our opinion, extreme heroism by intervening or intervening to stop the suspects,” he said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Los Angeles said on Sunday that it had left an urgent mark on firearms.
“This will determine who was the first buyer of the weapons,” the bureau tweeted.
Authorities said four Asian men, aged 66, 75, 82 and 92, and an 86-year-old Asian woman were injured in the shooting.
“The identity of the deceased will be revealed pending official identification by the coroner and notification of relatives,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
About 30 to 40 people attended the reception, Halok said.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said his office “works closely with local law enforcement.”
“No one should be afraid to go to his place of worship. “Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and everyone affected by this tragic event,” Newsham tweeted.
The Taiwanese Congregation, which became a sister congregation at the Geneva Presbyterian Church about five or six years ago, always has lunch after its Sunday morning service, Laguna Woods Mayor Pro Cynthia Connors told CNN.
“We will see what we can do to meet the members of the congregation, we will attract one of the Orange Human Rights Committee … and we will try to make sure that the Asian members of our community feel so safe as much as all the other members of our community, although I have to say that today we all feel a little less secure, “Connors said.
The Taiwanese government has said its economic and cultural office in Los Angeles has activated emergency response plans.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sends our deepest condolences to the victims and their families,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Joan Ou. “We will keep in touch with the victims’ family members to understand their needs and provide all the necessary assistance,” she added.
