SNL: Pete Davidson confirms release from a series of sketches – Read the statement

Just hours before the finale of season 47, Pete Davidson took to Instagram to confirm his upcoming release on Saturday Night Live.

Along with a video of him embracing Jerod Carmichael, Davidson posted an emotional statement (from the account of SNL writer and King of Staten Island Dave Sears) about the eight years he spent performing late-night sketches:

Jarod sent [the video] to me last night and made me super emotional in the best way. In the video, I had just returned from my first update and sketch. It’s crazy to think I’ll do my last today. When I received the show, I was 20 years old and had no idea what I was doing. I still don’t do it, but especially then. I wasn’t really a sketch artist, I was just a stand-up comedian. I knew I could never handle Kenan Thompson or Kate McKinnon, so I was super scared to find out what I could bring or do for such a historic, respected show and platform. I decided that since I was a standup, I would just try my standup and personal stuff in the Weekend Update like myself and I’m glad I did. I have to share so much with this audience and literally grow before your eyes. We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest times. I owe my life to Lorne Michaels and everyone at SNL. I am so grateful and I would not be here without them. I appreciate you guys for always holding my back and standing up for me, even when it wasn’t popular. Thank you for always believing in me and sticking to me, even when it seemed comical. Thank you for teaching me the values of life, how to grow up and for giving me memories that will last a lifetime. SNL is my home. I am so happy and sad about the show tonight. For so many reasons, I can’t explain. I can’t wait to go back to Mulaney’s musical next year. “Pete Davidson, a regular young man.”

RELATED STORIES

Davidson joined SNL in 2014 as a featured player before eventually becoming a full-time player. One of the youngest cast members in the show’s history (he was only 20 when he debuted), he became famous for his appearances on Weekend Updates and digital shorts. However, as his star rose, his SNL appearances were less frequent; he has been absent from several episodes this season. (His departure was first announced by Variety.)

As previously reported, Kate McKinnon, Eddie Bryant and Kyle Mooney are also leaving the show after Saturday’s finale, hosted by Natasha Lyon, which airs at 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on NBC.
