It all started when Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat running for Senate, enlisted Snooki — real name: Nicole Polizzi — to record a personalized cameo message for his Republican opponent Mehmet Oz — better known as Dr. Oz, the former endorsed by Oprah medical talk show host. On Cameo, users pay celebrities to send personalized video messages and provide as much (or as little) detail as possible to the celebrity so they can personalize their video. Fetterman apparently told Polizzi that the “Mehmet” he refers to in the video had recently moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania in search of a new job.
“I heard you moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to look for a new job,” Polizzi said in the clip, which Fetterman tweeted Thursday. “I want to wish you luck. I know you are far from home and in a new place, but Jersey will not forget you.’
She ended with a dig that was probably unintentional: “And don’t worry! Because you’ll be back home in Jersey soon enough. This is only temporary.”
Fetterman shared the video on Twitter, tagged Oz and wrote, “JERSEY loves you + won’t forget you!!!”
It’s unclear if Polizzi was in on the prank, and she has so far not commented on the video. As of Friday morning, however, it is still available for reservation on Cameo, starting at $300. The Pennsylvania incumbent has no qualms trolling his opponent: He’s selling a “Dr. Oz for New Jersey” sticker and paying for an airplane banner that sarcastically welcomes Oz “home to New Jersey,” a dig at Oz for running for office for a position in Pennsylvania after spending years in the Garden State. (According to CNN’s Daniel Dale, although Oz attended the University of Pennsylvania and two of his children were born there, he lived for years in a mansion in New Jersey. He is registered to vote in Pennsylvania at his father-in-law’s address, where (his campaign says he’s living while a new property is being built for him.) MSNBC contributor Sam Stein reported that Snooki’s clip cost the campaign more than $390. Oz responded to Fetterman’s rant about Snooki with a screenshot of a video of Chris Miares, who in 2013 was jogging near Fetterman’s home when Fetterman chased him armed with a shotgun. Fetterman, then mayor of Braddock, said he suspected Miyares of firing a gun, but Miyares said he was not armed. Miyares told the Philadelphia Inquirer last year that he did not believe the episode should affect Fetterman’s Senate bid.
Polizzi, meanwhile, currently stars in MTV’s “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation” with original cast members Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Jenny “JWoww” Farley, among others.
