South Florida weather brings torrential rain as potential tropical storm

Airlines have canceled more than 500 flights since Saturday morning, including some to and from Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports, according to the tracking site FlightAware.

The Miami Rescue Center posted a video on Twitter of cars stuck in the water, saying six high-water vehicles were outside and helping drivers.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended the flood warnings for Miami and Fort Lauderdale until at least noon.

“Between 6 and 11 inches of rain are falling. Additional rainfall of 2 to 5 inches is possible in the warned area,” said the NWS office in Miami.

More than 10 million people in South Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas remain under surveillance or warning of tropical storms, although Potential Tropical Cycle 1 is poorly organized off the west coast of the state.

It is unlikely to become the first-named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season before crossing Florida on Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

“The disturbance is expected to turn into a tropical storm off the east coast of Florida by (Saturday night) and some intensification is forecast from tonight to Monday as the system moves further away from Florida over the West Atlantic,” the NHC said.

Some places can be seen up to 15 inches before the end of Saturday; Miami was 11 inches by 9 in the morning. The NHC also says “significant sudden and urban floods” are expected in the region.

At 8 a.m., the center said the disturbance was about 45 miles southwest of Fort Myers with maximum steady winds of 40 miles per hour.

The tropical storm warning has been suspended for parts of the west coast of Florida. But the warning remains in effect for Florida Keys, other parts of the West Coast, East Coast and Lake Okeechobee, as well as parts of Cuba and the Bahamas.

A clock means that conditions for tropical storms are possible.

The tropical storm warning is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Matanzas and Youth Island. This means that tropical storm conditions are expected.

Finally, several tornadoes are possible across the southeast coast of Florida throughout Saturday.

Airlines canceled 841 flights on Friday amid multiple storm systems, according to FlightAware.

U.S. airlines have warned that Florida airport disruptions will continue over the weekend.
