Significant housing construction in the Pleasantville area of St. John’s is on the radar of the city council today.
The Charter Developments proposal will build 34 townhouses on Churchill Avenue, which is close to Techniplex.
The city has received some concerns about the proposed development by residents of the area, including the effect on housing aesthetics, impacts on the Virginia River footpath, the river itself, trees and wildlife, and the loss of green space. However, the city says the area is not a green space and has been designated and zoned for housing “for many years”.
As for the trail, the city explains that it falls mainly in the floodplain and its buffer zone. However, any part of the trail outside this area will need to be maintained.
If approved by the city council, the application will proceed to the next steps, which will include submitting a detailed plan for the design of units in the city.
