Starbucks North American President Rosan Williams is leaving the company and will be replaced by the head of the coffee chain division for Asia and the Pacific.
Friday’s announcement marks the company’s latest change under interim CEO Howard Schultz, who returned to the top job in April following the departure of former CEO Kevin Johnson. Schultz is expected to remain in the role until the end of the year, after the board nominated a long-term successor. So far, Schultz has halted the company’s share buyback program, set aside $ 1 billion to raise wages and improve cafes, and loudly repulsed union efforts.
“As we move on to the next chapter, we have made a difficult but necessary change in our North American business; a change that creates new leadership for a new era at Starbucks, ”wrote John Culver, the company’s chief operating officer. a note to employees reviewed by CNBC. “The decision was not taken lightly and was preceded by a discussion about the next opportunity for Rosan in the company, which she refused.
Williams has worked for Starbucks since 2004, when he joined the coffee chain after a stay at Toys’ R Us and Blockbuster. Over the past year, she has been one of the public figures in the company’s efforts to curb efforts to unite its baristas. More than 150 Starbucks cafes in the United States voted in favor of the union on Friday.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to announce Williams’ departure.
Sarah Trilling, who is currently president of Starbucks’ Asia-Pacific business, will succeed Williams as Tuesday. Trilling has been with the company for two decades, starting in her creative studio, working on the design of her retail store and moving forward. Williams will help with her transition in June, and Cliff Burroughs, president of the company’s division for America, will also help with consulting.
