Statement at East Midlands Airport as 3,000 passengers affected by the incident

East Midlands Airport (EMA) issued a statement after the terminal was evacuated following reports of a “suspicious package”. Passengers at Castle Donington Airport contacted Nottinghamshire Live to report the incident at around 4pm on Tuesday, May 10th.

It is estimated that as a result, eight flights were delayed. About 3,000 passengers are affected.

Nottinghamshire Live understands that three inbound flights have been diverted to other airports. Flight restrictions have already been lifted and airlines hope to remove all flights.

An EMA spokesman said: “Following reports of a suspicious package, the East Midlands airport terminal was evacuated this afternoon as a precaution so that police could conduct the investigations we need. Now it is open again and we are working with the airlines to take passengers on their flights. We thank the customers for their patience and understanding. ”

A Leicestershire police spokesman added: “Shortly after 3:10 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 10), a suspicious package was received at the East Midlands Airport’s main terminal. In the interest of employees and public safety, the terminal has been evacuated.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was called to help employees and found that the item did not pose a risk of harm to society. No criminal offenses were identified, no one was detained and the call was made in accordance with the relevant protocol. “
