Statement by Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre

President Biden tested positive for COVID-19 this morning. He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and is experiencing very mild symptoms. He has been started on Paxlovid. In accordance with CDC guidelines, he will self-isolate at the White House and continue to perform all of his duties in full during this time. He contacted White House staff members by phone this morning and will participate in his scheduled meetings at the White House this morning by phone and Zoom from the residence.

In accordance with the White House’s protocol for positive cases of COVID, which goes beyond CDC guidelines, he will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative. After giving a negative test, he will return to personal work.

Out of an abundance of transparency, the White House will provide a daily update on the president’s condition as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.

As per standard protocol for any positive case at the White House, the White House Medical Unit will inform all of the president’s close contacts today, including all members of Congress and any members of the press who interacted with the president during yesterday’s trip. The president’s last previous COVID test was on Tuesday, when he tested negative.
